Ty Watson Weekend of Workshops

June 20-22, 2025

Come hang out and deepen your yoga practice with one of my favorite yoga teachers Ty Watson of The Studio in NY, NY. Ty teaches with clarity, kindness, humor and depth. We are so very lucky to have him come out for this weekend immersion of all things Katonah Yoga and more! You will interact, practice, engage, learn and grow a lot!!

You are welcome to try one, two or all three. No prior knowledge of Katonah yoga is necessary.

Friday Katonah Restorative Masterclass June 20, 6-8pm  (2 hours)

To break new ground, to reconcile something that is nagging you, to fold new information into your practice and yourself, requires a finesse of restorative technique that goes beyond simply relaxing. This session will be a spacious restorative experience (and breath work!) to put into practice what it means to not only restore, but reform and forge a new frame of reference.

Saturday Session June 21, 1-5pm (4 hours)

A dynamic afternoon blend of practice and theory! Yoga that functions well, that wakes us up, that can alter our chemistry and access our more conscious, sentient self, is yoga that needs to be measured, yoga that fits well, and - importantly - yoga that holds up over time. That type of therapeutic endeavor requires technique instead of personal style, information instead of impulse, and the contact of community to lend us a hand. Expect fundamentals, metaphor, theory...all dispersed throughout a workshop-style asana practice and dynamic breathwork to raise our spirits.

Sunday Session June 22, 12-4 (4 hours)

So much of ourselves we learn through reflection with others. Where we go too much, where we don't go at all, what doesn't even occur to us as an option we find much more clearly when we are in contact with our community. This afternoon will include some body reading, what we might do with some of the information we can pull out of our yoga practice and poses, how we can set ourselves and each other up in more restorative poses, adjusting and being adjusted, and how to work with your own or a student's injuries or foibles. You don't need to be a teacher to attend, so come to learn, to play and to be together.

Meet Ty:

WHAT DREW YOU TO KATONAH YOGA?

I was drawn to the idea that having a spiritual experience is as simple as finding a new frame of reference than the one that you’re used to. This “aha moment” is usually the result of something practical, like using a measure of two fists between your feet to find them hip-width distance.

HOW HAS KATONAH CHANGED YOUR PRACTICE & TEACHING?

Katonah has changed my practice and teaching by allowing me to explore the use of metaphor. I’ve been able to give my students the tools to measure themselves well so that the structure of the body holds up, simple, necessary tasks with real function for living a better life as opposed to the fancy footwork of a choreographed sequence. Using metaphor in this way allows me to bring students with me on a narrative that lets them move into their own house and invest their imagination into their practice.

HOW HAVE YOU SEEN KATONAH CHANGE STUDENTS?

One of Katonah Yoga’s most distinct characteristics is its use of language. During my early 20’s I moved from South Africa to the USA, and even though I spoke the same language explicitly I lost some of the implicit fluency of day to day life. The nuance of culture within language defines so much of what it means to be understood in a place. Often you are misunderstood not just by words and their meaning, but by the cultural reference points in the contact that you’re making. So even in simple interactions, your most casual conversation becomes an experience where something is missed. Having a practice that refined how I was able to articulate myself gave me back so much of that fluency and it is something I consistently see Katonah Yoga give students: the words to help them better navigate the world and their lives.
